I slamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has called an emergency meeting to discuss the increasing energy crisis in the country after huge and violent protests hit major cities.

The meeting will be held tonight at the President house inIslamabad. The agenda of the meeting will be to devise a new strategy to deal with the water, electricity and energy crisis.

Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar, Minister for Petroleum Dr Asim Hussain and Minister Finance Hafeez Shaikh wil be attending the meeting. The ministers are asked to present policy recommendations to overcome the energy crisis.

The emergency meeting comes after the government’s key allies, the Pakistan Muslim League-Q, protested in the Senate session earlier today over the problem of increasing load-shedding in the country, threatening to quit the coalition government if the issue was not addressed.

“The nation is suffering from ever-increasing loadshedding … and the federal ministers pays no heed to the people’s miseries. This issue can not be put on the back-burner,” said a PML-Q legislator during a session of the Upper House earlier on Thursday.

Sources says some important decisions are expected in today’s meeting at the President house. Moreover, sources added that the president had cancelled all his appointments for the meeting.

Another source revealed that the government is expected to come up with a new strategy to fight the impending energy crisis after Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani returns from his five-day visit to the UK.
